The
answer is use Transferwise.
TransferWise is a British online money transfer service founded in January 2011 by Estonians Kristo Käärmann and Taavet Hinrikus and is based in London. The company supports more than 750 currency routes across the world including GBP, USD, EUR, AUD and CAD, and provides multi-currency accounts.
The Good news is it already here in Malaysia. You
can now send money to 83 countries at prices up to 4x cheaper than the banks. It
is an online account that lets you send money, get paid, and spend money
internationally without the high fees added by most high-street banks.
The
service has routes in 16 Asian countries including Singapore, Indonesia,
Thailand, the Philippines, Hong Kong, China, Japan and India.
A
regular bank transfer will usually incur a less than optimal
exchange rate, and fees both with the sending and receiving bank, and
often also with random banks along the way. ... But for small to mid-sized transfers, TransferWise is
a godsend. It's both cheaper and significantly faster.
At Star Online news 28 November 2019, Its
chairman Taavet Hinrikus says the entry into Malaysia was due to a high number
of requests from potential customers – over 15,000 altogether.
“Along
the way, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and other government departments were very
professional in the way they handled our application. By allowing and
encouraging more nonbanks to provide financial services in Malaysia, BNM is
ensuring consumers benefit from better and more affordable services,” he said.
Hinrikus
claims the company's currency exchange rates match the rates listed online,
unlike other remittance services or banks.
“We
only ever charge you what it costs us to send your money, plus a smaller
margin,” the company states.
The
service boasts that it can provide lower rates because it does not actually
remit cash across borders.
With
this system, the company claims transfer can be done faster, with up to 80% of
transfers completed within a day.
TransferWise’s
service is:
1. Cheaper - by up to 4x compared to the banks. For
example, sending RM1,000 to the UK costs just RM7.20 with TransferWise, but
costs on average RM34.60 with a bank. This is based on the prices of five major
banks on 18 November 2019.
2. Faster - 80% of transfers globally are completed
within 24 hours
3. More transparent - the only service that uses the real
exchange rate, the one you see on Google
4. More convenient - a 100% online experience from
verification (only photo ID needed) to the setting up and completion of
transfers, with no need for customers to leave their homes
